4th and 5th grade students at Bacon have the opportunity to participate in BEST (Bacon Energy Savings Team) each year. In past years students in BEST have been responsible for coordinating Bacon's recycling program, running energy efficiency campaigns around the building, and educating faculty, staff and students about recycling and sustainability. Students learn about all of the green technology that is built into Bacon and are trained to give building tours to students, staff and the general public that highlight these features. in the 2011-2012 school year, Bacon was selected to particpate in the National Green Schools Conference in Denver. Two 5th grade students from BEST attended the three day conference to hear presentations about green technology and share their own experiences at Bacon. It was a lot of fun!
In the future, BEST will transition from educating older students about sustainability and green technology to service learning. The goal of BEST is to give students a basic understanding of enivronmental principles so that they can develop projects on their own (with guidance) that benefit Bacon and the community. Students will also be encouraged to collaborate with other students in BEST and in other grade levels on projects to build a sense of community. This builds on a second goal of BEST, to be inclusive of younger students as well in the coming years.
