It’s time to get ready for Bacon’s Battle of the Books! This program is for any Bacon 3rd -5 th grader who enjoys a good book! It is a fun, collaborative way to get students reading! Participants will be assigned to a team of 4-5 grade level peers. They will be given a list of fantastic books to read in preparation for the Battle! Teams will meet during lunch/recess time once a week with a parent coach to discuss the books. The teams will then participate in a competition with a panel format for a live round of oral questions about the books. The questions are objective and factual, testing students’ recall of characters and events.
As a Battle of the Books member, students are required to read at least one of the books (but encouraged to read them all), attend team meetings, participate in discussions and attend the school competition at the end. Parents are asked to encourage their child to read and discuss the books. Parents can also support their reader by reading the books together or even reading the books to their child – any format works! This is such a great way to include all readers regardless of reading level – Battle of the Books is for ANYONE who loves a good book!
In order to make Battle of the Books a success, we rely heavily on our parent coaches and need one coach for each team. Typically we have 4-6 third grade teams and 2-3 fourth and fifth grade teams, so roughly 15 coaches are needed. So, if your child is wanting to participate and you have the time – please consider volunteering for this experience…the kids love it and it is rewarding to be a part of this program! We truly cannot do it without your help.
Battle of the Books (BOB) meetings will begin the Week of November 6th and run through March 2018. Our school competition will be April 12, 2018 at 4:15! Information and registration forms were sent in your students Friday folder already, but if you missed it, please contact one of us no later than October 10th if your child would still like to participate! We can’t wait for the Battle to begin… Suzanne Jarosz (email@example.com) & Erin Gallegos (firstname.lastname@example.org)
