Bacon believes in strong universal instruction for all students through district provided research-based curriculum. Most students will attain the five components to be successful readers. The five components include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Some readers will need additional enrichment to acquire the building blocks of phonemic awareness and phonics. Rather than have these student leave the classroom, Bacon classroom teachers in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are trained in the Orton Gillingham Multi-Sensory Reading Approach. Students receive small group targeted instruction from their classroom teacher.
Additionally some students receiving these small group targeted instruction need an additional lesson, or double dip, to acquire these skills. Students identified as needing this additional layer of instruction will receive pull out services through our Literacy Enrichment team or through Integrated Services team.
