Specials News — Art

Wow, what interesting times we live in right now! I have been so excited to finally start teaching and seeing students again, even though it is on a screen . . . I’ll take it! Since I have the privilege of kicking off the newsletter this year as the representative for Specials (Art, Music, P.E., and Technology), I thought it would be a good idea to share what to expect during Specials classes before I go into the art news.

Art, like most things this year, will look different than it has in the past. I started this newsletter by opening last year’s newsletter, a practice I do each year to see what needs to be modified before I save it with the new
year’s date. I love traditions and the beginning of my previous newsletters start with two:

  • Self-Portraits that we draw, and I keep in my file cabinet until students graduate from 5th grade or move to another school.
  • Loved-Ones Wrap-up when I send all the art we’ve made throughout the year home in big envelopes that I teach students how to fold.

I am going to do my best to try to get the Self-Portrait accomplished on a piece of copy paper and when we do get to come back to school, it will depend on how much work we have to see if we can wrap it up. I cannot wait to get to the artwork! With everyone having access to a computer, it opens many possibilities for digital art. However, since everyone does have a computer and will be having a lot of screen time, I want to make sure I can help students & families have a balance. Every Bacon Student will be getting a sketchbook this year! This sketchbook will be used on our art days, so please make sure you keep it in a safe place. I will be talking with students about what we will be doing with our sketchbooks, so please do not draw in them unless permission is given from me. Students will also need a graphite pencil (regular #2) and eraser. I will be encouraging students to also use color, but that can be up to the student (markers, colored pencil, crayons, etc). We will be learning together, and I may encourage other supplies, but we will get there when we get there. We are part of history and I cannot wait to see what we can do together!

Thank you for choosing to share your awesome artists with me!
