Third Grade Opinion Writing Focus and Keyboarding Skills

We have finished a personal narrative unit in writing and are currently finishing up an expository writing unit.

Expository writing is, without a doubt, the genre that your child will use most often in their school careers and on into their working lives. By definition, expository writing is written to inform an audience of others. You will see this type of writing from your child in the form of research papers, reports, essays, response to literature, how-to pieces, compare/ contrast pieces, and writing across the curriculum.

With this in mind, your child will learn the foundation and specific skills to be a successful writer in this genre. We will be working on building the necessary skills to write effectively including: organization, main ideas, supporting details, and conclusions.

As we transition into the new year, we will use our knowledge of expository writing to help us with a new genre, Opinion Writing. We will use details and evidence from books, websites, and articles to help prove our thinking. We have been doing a LOT of practice with providing supporting details to our writing.

We are also focused on improving keyboarding skills. Students need more practice typing as our world continues to grow more and more technologically advanced. Students will compose written and complete short answer responses in class. Two great typing websites to use at home for all grade levels are www.typingclub.com and www.funtotype.com.

We are looking forward to enhancing student writing and the excitement a new genre brings.
