We made it to May!! It has been quite the year, but we pushed through. The students have done amazing and have worked so hard both virtually and live. We really couldn’t have asked for more! This last month we will focus on reviewing strategies and skills taught, implement what we have learned this year so far and get introduced to a few 6th grade topics along the way. We will also have CMAS testing May 3rd through the 5th. The students will be only be tested on reading this year with one session on each day. Here is a preview of what’s to come this month:
Reading- As we work towards the completion of “Reach for Reading," some students will be practicing implementing the strategies we have learned into challenging readings of their choice. Within these books, we will be diving deep to determine the theme, synthesize information, make connections and identify the author's purpose.
Writing- In writing, students are really focusing on improving their convention skills in their writing pieces. Students will revisit past writing pieces and implement focused editing techniques to perfect them further. This past month students have spent a lot of time reviewing sentence fluency, organization, word choice, and transitions. In addition to some fun prompts and reflections, we hope the kids select some of their favorite pieces to bring home to you!
Math- This month we will be re-teaching topics and standards that the students have learned but have been challenged by this year such as: place value, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and decimals, and finding volume. In other groups, students will be challenged with some of the upcoming 6th grade topics and continue their quest for learning!
Science- In science, students will begin the Human Growth and Development unit. There will be 9 lessons with each lesson focusing on a different aspect. A Google slide was sent home for parents that identified the evidence outcome for each lesson as well. Further, as we missed our annual Eco Week field trip, we are hoping to take the kids on a virtual eco-week field trip before the year is over, time permitting. The district has provided us with some exciting activities and fun we can do in the classroom.
Finally, don’t forget to mark your calendars with Graduation celebrations as well! These dates are for individual classes and will be held the afternoons of May 19th, 20th and 21st. We are excited to be able to gather safely outside and know it will be a sweet and memorable way to send off these amazing kids you’ve shared.
